Filing your taxes after Irma and Harvey if your records are destroyed

The first thing you do when a hurricane is barreling toward you is thing about where to head for safety. The last thing on your mind is filing your taxes and what important documents you need to grab for safe keeping to do your tax preparation that year.

You may wonder what do you do if all your records have been destroyed. It may be possible to reconstruct certain tax records with a little work. In the wake of the two major hurricanes, the IRS has issued a Fact Sheet providing valuable insights (FS-2017-11, September 2017).
